In Edinburgh a staggering 3,930 households were assessed as homeless in 2013/14. So two team members, Penny and Martha spent the night outside on the ground at Edinburgh Zoo to raise awareness and money for two very worthwhile homeless charities.
And what an experience they had, not least with all the night noises of the animals at the zoo but also gleaning a small idea about how it feels to sleep outside with only a sleeping bag, pillow and torch. They used the word 'sleep' lightly...the temperature at it's lowest was 8 degrees, it was cold and obviously uncomfortable for them. It made them realise how lucky and incredibly privileged they were to be going home to a nice warm bed.
Through Virgin Money Giving all funds donated in support of ‘Sleep Out at Edinburgh Zoo for Homelessness’ were donated equally to the ‘Rock Trust’ and to ‘Four Square’. The amount raised from a group Penny and Martha were involved with was a whopping £28,000!! Well done girls!
